Ann Buchanan's courses encourage informal but informative discussion directly in front of works of art. The development of your 'critical eye' and an enthusiasm for the wealth of art to hand in Edinburgh are important aims of the EAS courses.
This course will focus on AS and A2 curriculum for A level History of Art, namely Classical, Renaissance and Baroque Art and Architecture.

This course is designed to provide an overview of History of Art from 1200 to present day with a particular reference to History of Art and Art A levels. The course takes place in the three outstanding National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, The Modern and Dean Galleries which will be showing an important exhibition of Surrealist Art during the Edinburgh Festival. The course will conclude with a private visit to the recently opened contemporary sculpture park at Jupiter Art Land, conveniently close to the airport for those travelling from further afield for this course.
EAS Student Festival course have been running for a decade in Edinburgh and is designed for 5th and 6th Formers. Students are encouraged to interact with works of art and discuss them with insight and confidence, directly in front of examples from the Wemyss Madonna by Botticelli in the Scottish National Gallery to the latest works by Andy Goldsworthy and Anish Kapoor at Jupiter Art Land.
Ann Buchanan teaches both History of Art and Art at A level at Loretto School and has experience as an examiner in these areas, so her course addresses the demands of the curriculum for both these subjects. Illustrated notes are provided and previous students have found these a very useful for their studies at school and later at University.
The course coincides with the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival and accomodation can be arranged if recquired.

The course will focus on A2 and AS papers,visual analysis and essay writing techniques. Students will be given strategies for answering questions in all topics and taught how to use examples effectively. An essay will be written in advance of the course in order that the needs of each individual student will be assessed and catered for in a seminar situation. The course will include a visit to the National Gallery London and National Gallery of Scotland in order to develop analytical skills.
The course will be taught in a centrally located house in both Edinburgh and London and include a visit to the National Galleries in both cities.
Jupiter Art Land's outstanding collection of contemporary sculpture includes the the works of Ian Hamilton Finlay, Charles Jenks, Andy Goldsworthy, Anish Kapoor, Anthony Gormley ,Cornelia Parker and other artists. Ann Buchanan has organised a private tour on a day when the collection is usually closed and will present a discussion of these artists.
